The Moorestown Police Department is urging residents to take precautions after a pair of daylight burglaries in the township.
On May 29, a resident of the 700 block of Dominion Dr. reported to Moorestown Police that his home was burglarized between 11:30 a.m. and 3:35 p.m. while the resident was out. It was determined that entry was made through a rear window which was forced open. The interior of the home was ransacked with jewelry and electronics stolen. A construction crew working nearby reported a red car in the area during this timeframe. The resident reported that when he left the house at around 11:30 a.m. he noticed a new style medium grey Chevrolet sedan, (similar to an Impala), behind him after he exited his driveway.
On June 9, a home in the 200 block of Demarest Dr. was broken into while the homeowner was away. Witnesses reported to police that two males, who were possibly Hispanic, were seen fleeing from the home at about 1:38 p.m. The males entered a maroon SUV, possibly a Hyundai Santa Fe. The vehicle was dirty, had a grey bumper, body damage possibly on the left side over the front wheel, roof rack and possible NJ license plates. The SUV was driven by a Hispanic or light skinned black male with a light beard, close cropped hair, and wearing black framed rectangle shaped glasses. The SUV was observed leaving the area on North Riding Dr. towards Riverton Rd. Police determined that forced entry was made through the rear kitchen door. The interior of the home was ransacked. At this time it is not known what was taken.
The department has also issued crime prevention tips for local residents:
•    Contact your local police department immediately to report suspicious activity, people or vehicles. Try to obtain complete descriptions including the person’s clothing/build, vehicle license plate, color, make and model. Please note the direction of travel if the suspicious person or vehicle leaves the area.
•    Please position house and business address numbers clearly for police, fire and ambulance. Most townships require three inch numbers to be clearly displayed.
•    Lock your home, make sure overhead garage doors are closed, especially when you go to bed for the night.
•    Vehicles left parked outside should be locked at all times. Do not leave valuables such as navigation/GPS units, radar detectors, laptop computers, satellite radio players, purses or cellular telephones visible.
•    Use your alarm system. If needed, have it adjusted by your alarm company to prevent false alarms. Excessive false alarms could result in township fines. Be sure your alarm company has current emergency contact information.
•    Use bank safe deposit boxes for valuables.
•    Document all valuables by description and with photographs. Secure this information in the event the items are lost, stolen or damaged.
•    Keep a list of any serial numbers for property.
•    Make note of suspicious telephone calls.
•    Do not allow restricted or blocked telephone calls (contact your telephone company for instructions about how to do this).
•    If someone you do not know comes to your home unexpectedly, do not open the door; ask through the door why they are there. Make note of what they tell you, look out a window and note their description and call your local police to report a suspicious person. If the person leaves your property let the police know the direction they left.
•    Call your local police if you see suspicious activity, people or vehicles at your neighbor’s home.
•    Keep shrubs trimmed away from your windows and doors.
•    Use exterior lighting around porches, entrances, and yards.
•    Place interior lights on timers and adjust each room to come on and off at different times.
•    If you are away during winter months have snow cleared from you driveway and walkways. If you are away during the warmer months have your lawn mowed.
•    If you arrive at your home or business and discover a burglary, do not enter the property. Call 911 from a safe place.
•    Contact the Police Department Crime Prevention Officer if you have any questions regarding the tips and recommendations above.
Please note that these are only recommendations and not a guarantee that all burglaries will be prevented.
Please contact Det. Richard Naff at -3037 if you have any information regarding these burglaries.
